Still promoting Genotype Counseling and Education in Secondary Schools as we create awareness on Sickle Cell Disorder(School 3; Baptist High School Uwani, Enugu)

Genotype counseling and education in secondary schools is very essential for promoting informed health decisions among young people

Early education about genotypes especially in regions with high prevalence of sickle cell disorder like Nigeria can empower students to understand their genetic makeup, make responsible relationship choices, and reduce the risk of transmitting and inheriting this disorderšŸŽŠ

It was quite robust one at Baptist high school as the students were receptive and eager to learnā¤
There was questions and answers time as usual and a lot of myths and misconceptions were cleared. There is this particular question that kept occurring in the different schools; Is it possible for a parent with AA and AS genotypes ever give birth to SS? The answer is NO but I further cleared that there are scenarios where the supposed AA parent turns out to be AS after a Sickle cell child was already born. That is to buttress the fact that there are still misdiagnoses in this part of the world unfortunately

Take home: Do your genotype test and that of your loved ones at least in 2 government owned hospital and maybe add private or mission to avoid stories that touch
