Cannon Kene Sickle Cell Foundation was formed by Charity Amarachukwu (nee Aneke) after the death
of her beloved cousin Cannon Kenechukwu Nwanyawu who died in June 2006 after a long battle with
sickle cell disorder. The foundation is in loving memory of Cannon Kenechukwu
Nwanyawu(1972-2006).
Cannon's first inaugural meeting was in September 2007 with just four people in attendance;
Charity Amarachukwu,Barr Brightson Okenwa, Late Reginald Mgbodile and Rita Okoye.The formal
inauguration was in March 2008 and CAC (Limited by Guarantee) registration was in July 2012.
Since inception, the foundation has been working alongside other NGO's, health professionals,
parents and individuals living with sickle cell disorder to raise awareness and build support
for all people affected by sickle cell disorder.
To improve the quality of life of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disorder through quality care,support, advocacy, education and research.
To be the best destination for care and support for all people affected by sickle cell disorder in Enugu state, Nigeria and beyond.
Charity Ndidiamaka Amarachukwu (Physiotherapist/Genetic counsellor) is the founder and chief executive of Cannon Kene Sickle Cell Foundation. In 2007, she founded Cannon Kene Sickle Cell Foundation as a means to provide quality life for people living with Sickle cell disorder and their families through advocacy,education, support and research. In 2008, after official inauguration of the foundation, she enrolled and trained as a certified genetic counsellor on sickle cell haemoglobinopathy. Over the past 15 years she has served on several state and national advisory committees and has represented sickle community in various professional roles assignments. Charity N. Amarachukwu brings a unique professional and social experience into her role as a community mobilizer and advocate who has navigated the sickle cell boat both outside of the health system as an advocate and within the system as a physiotherapist and counsellor in the clinical care team.Its through this dual lens that she continues to impact many individuals, families and professionals of all who has a critical role in improving the outcomes of interventions within this precious population. She has received several awards and accolades as a passionate crusader of sickle cell disorder.
